AI in Renewable Energy Market 2026: How Grid Operators Are Solving the Intermittency Problem

- 2 min read
Renewable energy hit a real inflection point in 2025: additions reached 793 GW globally, with solar PV accounting for 83% of new capacity, according to Enverus's 2026 Global Renewable Energy Trends Report. But more capacity brings more variability, and grid operators are increasingly turning to AI to manage it. ResearchAndMarkets projects the AI in energy market will expand from $22.82 billion in 2025 to $60.6 billion by 2030, a 21.4% CAGR, driven specifically by AI-powered grid intelligence and real-time energy analytics.
Forecasting Is the Highest-Priority Use Case
Enverus surveyed over 100 energy professionals globally, drawing on real-world data from more than 64,000 projects representing over 5.1 TW of simulated capacity, and found respondents identified AI-driven optimization, forecasting, and predictive maintenance as the technologies most likely to transform renewables over the next five years. That's a direct response to solar and wind's core commercial challenge: output that varies with weather is far harder to sell into markets and integrate into grids than steady baseload power, and AI forecasting models are what let operators bid renewable capacity into markets with confidence.
Where AI Is Being Deployed Across the Renewable Value Chain
55% of surveyed energy professionals already use advanced digital tools for permitting and site feasibility, while 56% leverage drone imagery and LiDAR in early-stage project design
AI algorithms can identify and respond to cybersecurity threats on the grid while simultaneously predicting congestion and load distribution instability
Within AI-in-energy applications, the renewable energy segment is projected to scale at the highest growth rate of 41.6% of any application category
The grid services portfolio optimization market alone is growing from $2.85 billion in 2025 to $3.28 billion in 2026, projected to reach $5.74 billion by 2030
Storage Is Becoming Inseparable From AI Strategy
Battery energy storage system (BESS) planning is increasingly bundled with AI-driven design tools, and standalone BESS features on platforms like RatedPower now represent 3% of total project simulations, up from a standing start just over a year ago, signaling growing commercial interest beyond storage that's simply co-located with generation. In emerging markets across Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia, solar-plus-storage paired with AI-driven management is increasingly positioned as the default path to grid stability and energy access, rather than a premium add-on.
Regional Adoption Patterns
Asia-Pacific maintains the leading position in AI-driven renewable energy management, propelled by large-scale deployments and significant investment in smart grids across China, India, Japan, and South Korea. North America is projected to record significant growth as utilities expand investments in AI-driven grid optimization and distributed energy management specifically to support decarbonization and grid resilience goals.
What It Means for the Market
AI has moved from a nice-to-have efficiency layer to the core infrastructure that makes high renewable penetration commercially and technically viable. As storage markets are expected to more than double globally by 2030, expect AI forecasting, predictive maintenance, and storage optimization to keep converging into a single integrated discipline, with the vendors that can deliver all three coherently best positioned to capture utility and developer budgets as grid complexity keeps rising.
