Grid Batteries Jump Nearly 50% in a Year: Inside the $55B Energy Storage Market Racing Toward 450 GWh

Global installations of battery energy storage systems (BESS) reached about 315 GWh in 2025, nearly 50% above the year before, according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence as reported by pv magazine. The same analysts expect more than 450 GWh of new operational capacity in 2026. For investors, utilities and equipment suppliers, that makes grid batteries one of the clearest growth stories in energy right now.

The Numbers Behind the Surge

Grid-scale projects did most of the work: nearly 240 of the roughly 315 GWh installed in 2025 came from grid-scale systems, and 46 giga-scale projects entered operation, up from 17 in 2024. More than 150 giga-scale projects are in the 2026 pipeline. On the revenue side, one published projection puts the global BESS market at USD 55.3 billion in 2026, rising to about USD 181 billion by 2033 at an 18.5% CAGR.

Where the Growth Is Coming From

China is by far the largest market, installing more capacity in December 2025 alone than the US did in the whole year. The US ranks second. Saudi Arabia, Australia and Chile placed third to fifth in 2025, displacing the UK and Italy from the top five. By region, Asia-Pacific holds roughly 45% of the market in the same projection and North America about 25%, while Europe is described as the fastest-growing region.

Chemistry, Cost and the Risks to Watch

Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) is the leading chemistry at about 42% of the market, and sodium-ion is named as the fastest-growing type from a small base. Rising lithium prices were already visible at cell level at the start of 2026 but had not fully reached system pricing, which is a key watch item for project returns. Interconnection queues, fire-safety siting rules and trade exposure on battery components remain the practical hurdles.

What It Means for Your Strategy

Utility-owned projects still lead, at about 48% of end-user demand in the anchor source, but commercial and industrial buyers and third-party ownership models are the fastest-growing segments. Suppliers that can serve both giga-scale utility tenders and smaller commercial projects, and that hedge cell supply across chemistries, are best positioned for the 2026 build-out. Note that market values vary by publisher and scope, so check definitions before comparing figures.
